Design Approach:

Modern and Eye-Catching Design: The new logo design features the word "PRIDE" in a bold, uppercase font with the letters filled with vibrant gradient colors. This modern look is further enhanced by the use of a strong typographic style, ensuring the logo stands out and captures attention.

Grit and Rebellious Spirit: To reflect the theater's rebellious spirit, the design incorporates a subtle texture overlay, giving the logo a gritty feel. The exclamation mark adds an element of surprise and excitement, reinforcing the theater's dynamic and bold nature.

Versatility and Consistency: The style guide provides multiple variations of the logo, including different color schemes and orientations. This ensures the logo can be used across various platforms and media, maintaining consistency while allowing flexibility in its application.

The variations include:

  • Gradient fills in blue to pink, purple, and black/gray for different moods and uses.

  • Versions with and without bounding boxes for diverse design needs.

Inclusivity and Representation: The use of rainbow-inspired gradient colors in the "PRIDE" letters represents the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity. The overall design celebrates the theater's commitment to representing and uplifting queer voices.

Visual Consistency with Flexibility: While maintaining a consistent visual identity, the design allowed for flexibility to ensure that each show's unique qualities were highlighted. This balance ensured that the season's posters were visually cohesive yet distinctively representative of each production.

Design Prompt

For the previous season at The Pride Arts Center in Chicago, the design prompt was less about maintaining a consistent visual identity across all shows and more about tailoring each poster to the specific aesthetic preferences of the individual directors and the marketing manager. The goal was to create unique and eye-catching designs that aligned with the vision of each show's creative team while also meeting the promotional needs of the theater.

Customized Visual Themes: Each poster was crafted to reflect the distinct narrative and tone of the show it represented:

  • "Damn Yankees": Featured a bold and vibrant design with strong colors and dynamic imagery, capturing the energetic and fiery spirit of the show.

  • "Torch Song": Utilized a glamorous and dramatic aesthetic, with a focus on rich textures and striking visual elements to convey the show's theatrical essence.

  • "The Queen's Fool": Employed a whimsical and playful design with intricate illustrations and a regal color palette to reflect the historical and comedic nature of the production.

  • "Promised Myself to Live Faster": Showcased a futuristic and surreal style, incorporating elements of sci-fi and abstract art to match the show's innovative and thought-provoking queer themes.

Project Requirements

Director and Marketing Manager Input: Each design was developed in close collaboration with the show's directors and the marketing manager. Their input was integral in shaping the final look and feel of each poster, ensuring that the artwork aligned with their vision and effectively communicated the essence of the show.

Flexibility in Design: The absence of a mandated consistent visual theme allowed for greater creative freedom. This flexibility enabled the design team to explore a wide range of styles and techniques, resulting in a diverse collection of posters that were visually engaging and distinctively tailored to each production.

Adaptability for Print and Digital Formats: All posters were formatted for both print and digital use. This included creating high-resolution versions suitable for large-format printing and optimized versions for online promotion, ensuring that the artwork could be effectively used across various marketing channels.

Summary

This project emphasized the importance of flexibility and collaboration in the design process. By working closely with the directors and marketing manager, the design team was able to create a series of visually stunning and unique posters that captured the essence of each show while meeting the promotional needs of The Pride Arts Center. The resulting artwork successfully highlighted the diverse range of productions, each with its own distinct visual identity.
